So much goodness in this. Loved the artist’s reflection on how people aren’t quite sure how to talk to artists and their work, and her suggestions to bridge that divide. Maybe we should all publish our own users manual like she offers for artists here! And love “my main brush is a power sander”. A beautiful subject well observed.
I met someone who published their own user’s manual. It is a brilliant idea. I, too, like Joy’s advice on how to approach artists. It feels like I have been given permission to do something that I didn’t think I had the right to do.
"Chuck Close used to say “Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work.” I like that. If you just sit around all the time waiting for inspiration, you're never going to create anything."
This completely resonates. Thanks for sharing your friend!
This was fascinating. I'm sharing with my sister who paints. It is also very interesting for me, a writer, to be reminded that the tension between creating and selling exists no matter the discipline.

It is a good reminder, isn’t it?
Yup. I certainly wish Joy much success as the creative process continues.

It was such a great conversation. I am glad you enjoyed, and I hope your sister does, too.
